Gear Review: Cypher Shoes

Our friends up north at Ontario Climbing recently published a review praising two models of Cypher shoes, the Codex and Sentinel. The reviewer tried the shoes during a few days at the crag and the shoe's performance not only impressed him, but his climbing partners as well.

The performance of the Codex was described this way: "I felt like I was cheating. Miniscule footholds felt like ledges. It was effortless to stand on holds I would normally skate off without intense focus."

The Sentinels like this: "Anyone who knows me would agree the Sentinels are more my style. I’m obsessed with climbing shoe comfort. While these were sized about a half-size small for me, they were still infinitely comfortable."

Cypher Zero Climbing Shoe

It's always a treat to open up my mailbox and see the latest issue of Rock and Ice magazine sitting there, begging me to procrastinate everything important so that I can look through its pages.

Amongst the pages of vertical literature and photography, I found the review that Dave Pegg did about the new Cypher Zero climbing shoe. I was stoked to see that he enjoyed the shoes as much as I have. In fact, this is what he said about the first time he strapped them on:
“The first time I climbed in the Zero I experienced a phenomenon I've never heard before. Its soles squeaked, like sneakers on a basketball court. This come-to-Jesus moment gave me unquestioning and eternal faith in the stickiness of Enigma HP.”

First impressions are important. My first impression of the Cypher Zero was on a 5.13a that I have been projecting in American Fork. Having already fallen in love with the Cypher Code, I was anxious to try out the Zero on the overhung terrain of side-pulls and crimps that this route dished out. I mean, that’s the kind of stuff for which the shoe was made.

As I dispatched onto the route, I was able to make the following observations about the Zero’s construction and performance.

Construction
  • Crisscross Velcro closure system: Instead of having two parallel straps of Velcro, the Zero uses a crisscross system that helped provide a more custom fit to my foot.
  • Synthetic upper and cotton liner: Synthetic shoes are all the rage these days. They breathe well and they don’t stretch too much.
  • Ventilation holes: My feet sweat a lot. So the mini-perforations on the shoe’s upper really played to my liking.
  • Aggressive asymmetric shape: Pointy and curved. That’s what my feet looked like in these shoes.
  • Flexible downturned last: Even though the shoe held my foot in a curved shape, it allowed my foot to flex and smear on the nasty slab section.
  • Enigma HP rubber: Cypher’s very own rubber, which has proven its stickiness and durability over the last year.

Performance
  • Flexible and sensitive: The Zero allowed my foot to flex and the rubber allowed my toes to feel more of the rock.
  • Mastered various forms of footwork: The pointy toe worked great on the pockets and small jibs, as well as on slabs and edges.
  • Provided great traction: With the Zero on my feet, I felt just as confident as I have while wearing other shoes with different rubber on the same route.
  • Got the job done: Even though I didn’t get the send that day, the Zero allowed me to make some improvements on the route. Giving me hope that I’ll send it soon.

In the end, I am very impressed with the Cypher Zero and can’t wait to strap them on for the other projects I have in the queue. If you are looking for a solid pair of aggressive shoes for hard sport climbing and bouldering, I recommend the Zero. Check them out on CypherClimbing.com.

Note: Cypher will now be manufacturing the Zero with Vibram XS Grip rubber

Cypher Logic Now In Stock

We are super stoked for the new line of Cypher climbing shoes. We just recently stocked our warehouse with the new Cypher Logic.

The Cypher Logic is a full-leather shoe with a comfortable synthetic liner that cinches down perfectly on any foot with a lace system that reaches down to the toes.

The Logic, in all its sturdiness, was designed with the approach, scramble, and descent in mind. In no way is the Logic limited to being just an approach shoe for rock climbing. It crosses over to many different applications like general hiking, walking around town, and even long-boarding.

New Shoes: Cypher Logic

We are super stoked for the new line of Cypher climbing shoes. We just recently stocked our warehouse with the new Cypher Logic.

The Logic, in all its sturdiness, was designed with the approach, scramble, and descent in mind. In no way is the Logic limited to being just an approach shoe for rock climbing. It crosses over to many different applications like general hiking, walking around town, and even long-boarding.

The Logic is equipped with a sticky sole made of Cypher Enigma rubber as well as an Enigma rubber toe rand, similar to that of most rock climbing shoes.

A number of Liberty Mountain employees have been putting these kicks through the ringer and have said that they perform great in many different situations. One employee even went out on a three-mile run while wearing the Logic and said that they substituted well in place of traditional running shoes. We've seen these shoes snapping up ollies on skateboards, topping out on moderate climbing routes, and peddling hard on mountain bikes.

The Cypher Logic is available for retail at your favorite Cypher dealer and on the Liberty Mountain Climbing website. If you are a retailer and would like to carry the new line of Cypher climbing shoes, you can place your order on our dealer website at www.libertymountain.com, or by contacting your regional sales rep.

The Cypher Code Breaker

The following trip report is by Benjamin Eaton, Liberty Mountain’s Communications Specialist.

"Indy and Fisher Eaton, your mission, shall you accept it, is to scale an insurmountable amount of cliffs and boulders. We have issued you a pair of Cypher Code Breaker climbing shoes to make your mission successful. Wear them with pride. This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds..."

With excited smiles my two little boys received a pair of Cypher Code Breaker climbing shoes for beta testing. They couldn't wait to try them out. We first took them to an indoor climbing wall where they were able to get familiar with them and break them in. Then we headed out on a four-day trip to Red Rocks, Nevada to exploit the shoe’s performance on varnished sandstone.

The Cypher Code Breakers were specifically designed for children. At the ages of 4 and 6, my boys were able to put the shoes on, strap them tight, climb, and then take them off...all by themselves. That alone was a deal breaker. Indy and Fisher are very independent and can't stand it when my wife and I have to assist them in any way.

After a half-mile approach to the Hidden Falls crag in the Willow Spring area at Red Rocks, Indy and Fisher selected a portion of the wall that they desired to take laps on. Doing it all by themselves, they took turns using the shoes and left my wife and I free to lead the climbs towering over us. Eventually, we busted out the full-body kids harness and roped both boys up to have them try the Code Breakers on something a little steeper.

The Code Breakers left my two boys feeling confident on the rock. If it weren’t for these shoes, my boys would otherwise choose to climb barefoot. However, the low profile design and the sticky Enigma rubber allowed them to feel as though they were semi-barefoot, kept their feet from sliding around on the rock, and protected their toes. As a parent, I was 100% happy with them and my boys are already anxious to use them again.

…..

The new Cypher Code Breakers, along with many other new Cypher climbing shoes, are scheduled to hit the market during the beginning of 2013. Keep an eye out for them at your local Cypher dealer and on libertymountainclimbing.com
