The Cypher Code Breaker

The following trip report is by Benjamin Eaton, Liberty Mountain’s Communications Specialist.

With excited smiles my two little boys received a pair of Cypher Code Breaker climbing shoes for beta testing. They couldn't wait to try them out. We first took them to an indoor climbing wall where they were able to get familiar with them and break them in. Then we headed out on a four-day trip to Red Rocks, Nevada to exploit the shoe’s performance on varnished sandstone.

The world says that the father of the headlamp is Fernand Petzl. Maybe it is because he used the elastics from his wife’s bra to make his first headlamp prototype for caving. In all reality, Fernand Petzl incorporated his caving headlamp designs to invent the first mountaineering headlamp in 1973.

How To Battle The Wind and Gnats at Lake Powell

As a buyer at Liberty Mountain I always have tons of products I want to try out in real life situations.  I usually have at least 8 flashlights, 3 fire starters, a couple of sunscreens and bug spray among other things in my testing queue.

Lake Powell is known for its strong, sustained winds. In fact, it was the sand and wind of Lake Powell that sparked the invention of Toughstakes. Naturally I took about 12 small size Toughstakes and a couple of the large size.  Good thing I did. A gust of wind came along before I had time to attach the Toughstakes to my sisters tent. The wind lifted her tent and pulled out all but one of her thin stakes.  I’m sure it would have been a kite if we weren’t holding onto it.

Nalgene Plastic Bottles - Outside Magazine's Most Influential Gear

Outside Magazine named the Nalgene Plastic Bottle as the "Most Influential Gear Of All Time." Let's find out why.

Think back to your very first Nalgene water bottle. Did it look like one of the two bottles below? And were you able to easily buy it from any outdoor gear store?

Back in the day, say around 1970, outdoor enthusiasts purchased their Nalgene bottles through laboratory-equipment suppliers. Vaude in the Movies: The Incredible Hulk

Back in 2008, The Incredible Hulk movie, staring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, hit the theater screens.

In the opening scenes, Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is seen running through the favelas of Brazil wearing a VAUDE backpack as he is chased by soldiers.

Pieps Global Finder

At the start of a typical day of work, this was the email that greeted every Liberty Mountain employee at 8:02 am. Jake Hirschi, Climbing Buying Manager at Liberty Mountain, decided to hit up his fellow employees at the office while he was busy "working" on the summit of Washington's Mt Rainier. At 14,411 feet elevation, Jake relied on his Pieps Global Finder to send out this mass-email to his co-workers. Not only did he send a quick little message from the top, but his message also contained a link that allowed the office-dwellers to see his live progression on the mountain using Google Maps and Google Earth.

Minutes later, Jake was on his descent back to the bottom of this massive mountain when he started receiving reply messages from his co-workers.

Stanley Insulated Bottles - OM's Most Influential Gear

**This is one of many posts featuring items on Outside Magazine's Most Influential Gear list that we distribute from the Liberty Mountain warehouses to outdoor gear shops around the USA.**

A lunch box and a stainless steel thermos. That is what people invision when they think of the traditional working-American-man as he eats lunch. Sitting high above the city on a metal beam, the soot covered worker pours hot soup from his thermos and into his cup.

It's no surprise that Liberty Mountain outfits countless gear shops with the products made from the company that created this stereotypical image. Stanley.

Back in 1913, William Stanley Jr. discovered that a welding process he used for making electrical transformers could also be used to create insulated steal vacuum-bottles. This was a great improvement over the insulated vacuum-bottles made out of glass...obviously shatter proof.

World War II pilots used to carry these new thermos bottles in the B-17s. Other early uses were carrying human organs, bull semen, and on deep sea explorations. Now they are seen everywhere as they keep beverages and foods hot and ready to consume.

Liberty Mountain and Beal Soon To Make A Big Announcement

We have some exciting news and we just can't wait to tell you all about it.


Imagine yourself rock climbing. You're seconding up a route that you partner just finished leading while fighting the worst rope drag due to numerous rock ledges and roofs. As you climb, your partner heaves on the rope to take in the slack. The next thing you know your rope looks like a snake trying to shed its skin and you are dangling from what looks like a bundle of white nylon threads.

At some point along the timeline of a climbing rope's life the sheath will get wet, cut, grated, and definitely stretched. This leaves the core of the rope to be exposed or free to make parallel movements inside the sheath.

Many people have been to a climbing gym and seen how the sheath of the ropes are all bunched up at the ends. And some have even seen the result of when the sheath is cut while climbing as illustrated above.

"Sheath slippage" is no joke. It's actually dangerous. And that is why Liberty Mountain and Beal brought a phenomenal game changer to the US market last spring...UNICORE.

UNICORE is the industry leading method of securing the core and sheath of a rope together without changing the rope's performance and durability properties. UNICORE is much like the biological tissue/membrane that keeps the skin attached to the rest of the body.


With a UNICORE rope, climbers won't experience their sheath bunching at the ends and the core will not be overexposed from sheath slippage if the sheath gets cut.
