The Cypher Vesta Sport quickdraw was recently reviewed by Gif over at Rock Climber Life. Comparing it to the previous version of the Vesta Sport, he says "The dogbone is totally different and a huge improvement.  It’s super stiff and perfect for hard sport climbing."

Gear Review: Cypher Shoes

Our friends up north at Ontario Climbing recently published a review praising two models of Cypher shoes, the Codex and Sentinel. The reviewer tried the shoes during a few days at the crag and the shoe's performance not only impressed him, but his climbing partners as well. 

The performance of the Codex was described this way: "I felt like I was cheating. Miniscule footholds felt like ledges. It was effortless to stand on holds I would normally skate off without intense focus." 

The Sentinels like this: "Anyone who knows me would agree the Sentinels are more my style. I’m obsessed with climbing shoe comfort. While these were sized about a half-size small for me, they were still infinitely comfortable."

Gear Review: Cypher Ceres II

Climbing Magazine affirms that the Cypher Ceres II is a “maximum value carabiner.”

With all the gear that is out on the market, I love flipping through the pages of my favorite outdoor magazines to see what gear they consider to be noteworthy. In the July 2014 issue of Climbing Magazine, the new Cypher Ceres II carabiner was reviewed for being a “maximum value carabiner.”

They started off their review by saying that “the Ceres II maintains a light weight and light price, with a few extra features that make it a top-notch, all-around carabiner.”



Let’s take a second to go over these “few extra features” that they mentioned:

• Bent Wire Gate: The quick and fluid action of the bent wire gate makes it easy to clip anything.
• Color-Coding: With seven different color options, the Ceres II is the perfect racking biner for color-coding all the different sized cams on your trad rack.
• Ribbed Spine: The subtle ribs along the outside of the spine provide a bit of extra grip while holding this small biner, even with gloves.

So what makes the Ceres II a “maximum value carabiner?” For starters, it’s only $6. Most of the time, these small, lightweight biners (30 grams or under) run for at least $8, reaching as high as $12. So for six bucks you get a small and light multi-color, bent wire gate biner that has awesome gate action, a ribbed spine, and hooded nose.

The moment these biners hit the market, I bought enough for all my cams, as well as a handful of Ceres II Alpine Draws. I am now sold on the whole color-coded trad rack thing, such a nice upgrade. Not only have I reduced the weight and size of my rack, I’ve made it more efficient by making it easier to find the right cam when I’m in a sketchy place on the wall.

The Ceres II biners have already proven their worth on two big walls in Zion, as well as a handful of local multi-pitch routes in the Wasatch Mountains. I’m definitely glad I upgraded my rack with these gems and would recommend them to all my climbing friends.

Cypher Zero Climbing Shoe

It's always a treat to open up my mailbox and see the latest issue of Rock and Ice magazine sitting there, begging me to procrastinate everything important so that I can look through its pages.



Amongst the pages of vertical literature and photography, I found the review that Dave Pegg did about the new Cypher Zero climbing shoe. I was stoked to see that he enjoyed the shoes as much as I have. In fact, this is what he said about the first time he strapped them on:

“The first time I climbed in the Zero I experienced a phenomenon I've never heard before. Its soles squeaked, like sneakers on a basketball court. This come-to-Jesus moment gave me unquestioning and eternal faith in the stickiness of Enigma HP.”

First impressions are important. My first impression of the Cypher Zero was on a 5.13a that I have been projecting in American Fork. Having already fallen in love with the Cypher Code, I was anxious to try out the Zero on the overhung terrain of side-pulls and crimps that this route dished out. I mean, that’s the kind of stuff for which the shoe was made.

As I dispatched onto the route, I was able to make the following observations about the Zero’s construction and performance.

Construction

• Crisscross Velcro closure system: Instead of having two parallel straps of Velcro, the Zero uses a crisscross system that helped provide a more custom fit to my foot.
• Synthetic upper and cotton liner: Synthetic shoes are all the rage these days. They breathe well and they don’t stretch too much.
• Ventilation holes: My feet sweat a lot. So the mini-perforations on the shoe’s upper really played to my liking. 
• Aggressive asymmetric shape: Pointy and curved. That’s what my feet looked like in these shoes.
• Flexible downturned last: Even though the shoe held my foot in a curved shape, it allowed my foot to flex and smear on the nasty slab section.
• Enigma HP rubber: Cypher’s very own rubber, which has proven its stickiness and durability over the last year.

Performance

• Flexible and sensitive: The Zero allowed my foot to flex and the rubber allowed my toes to feel more of the rock.
• Mastered various forms of footwork: The pointy toe worked great on the pockets and small jibs, as well as on slabs and edges.
• Provided great traction: With the Zero on my feet, I felt just as confident as I have while wearing other shoes with different rubber on the same route. 
• Got the job done: Even though I didn’t get the send that day, the Zero allowed me to make some improvements on the route. Giving me hope that I’ll send it soon. 

In the end, I am very impressed with the Cypher Zero and can’t wait to strap them on for the other projects I have in the queue. If you are looking for a solid pair of aggressive shoes for hard sport climbing and bouldering, I recommend the Zero. Check them out on CypherClimbing.com.

In the morning we were fed and educated. During the day we climbed. In the evenings we were fed and entertained, only to repeat the pattern the next day.
