As the safest and fastest alternative to traditional locking carabiners, the new Grivel Twin Gate carabiners have been generating a lot of buzz in the climbing industry and making headlines in various magazines and websites:
Twin Gates Explained
As they say, two is always better than one and Grivel’s patented Twin Gate carabiners feature two independent and opposing gates that eliminate the need for any additional locking mechanism, making it quicker to use and more foolproof than any other locking carabiner on the market. Traditional carabiners (locking and non-locking) are notorious for clipping and unclipping on accident—as well as screwing and unscrewing—increasing the chance of injury, death, and huge inconveniences. The Grivel Twin Gate carabiners successfully cure this dilemma.
Compared to Traditional Locking and Non-Locking Carabiners
Twin Gates can replace both locking and non-locking carabiners, allowing you to use the same biner to rack gear, clip protection, build anchors, belay, rappel, and more. Leading the safety revolution, the Twin Gate carabiners win in safety and speed. Screwgates take about five seconds to clip and screw, while the Twin Gate only takes one second. There is no forgetting to “lock” the Twin Gate and there is no way for vibrations, gravity, and rope/rock contact to accidentally unlock the gates. Traditional locking mechanisms, screw and twist, get stuck in the open or closed positions due to grit, sand, or freezing conditions…this problem doesn’t exist with the Twin Gate.
Operation
To clip the Twin Gate, just open the outer gate and allow whatever is being clipped to push the inner gate open. To unclip, open the inner gate and allow whatever is being unclipped to push the outer gate open. Both operations are easily done using one hand. The moment the gates automatically close, the biner is locked and loaded.
Stevie Haston demonstrates the ease of using a Grivel Twin Gate:
